In this class, students will learn the foundational techniques of ceramic handbuilding with Slowfire teacher Ms. Salma. Using methods like pinching, coiling, and slab-building, they’ll create both functional and sculptural pieces inspired by hyper-realistic treats. Popular projects may include donut trinket dishes, cake-slice boxes, burger planters, fruit trays, and pastry magnets—each designed to fool the eye while building real clay skills (texture, carving, and attaching details). After building, students will add color with underglazes to achieve lifelike frosting, sprinkles, and “drizzles,” then finish everything with a glossy clear glaze. Because clay requires drying time and multiple kiln firings, all projects will be ready to take home at the end of the session.
All materials, kiln firings, and outside labor are included in the cost of the class. No prior clay experience is necessary! Beginners will learn the basics, while returning students will be guided to build on their skills and try new projects.
